Security Systems

Peace of mind may be the best perk of having a home security system installed in your home. The knowledge that there is “someone” watching over your house while your away, would really take the worry off your mind.

Think about it. If someone tries to break in your place while you’re not there, you’d know about it as he/she is in the act, and would be able to take necessary measures, through your installed home security system.

Most home security systems not only protect you, your family and/or your personal possessions, but they also often provide a quick link to the necessary authorities, should the need arise (for example, you’re away on a business trip).

Let’s explore just what exactly one has to deal with when home security systems are being talked about, and see just how much peace of mind these systems can provide.

A Security Monitoring System

The basic principle of a monitoring system can be understood by just saying the words out loud. Security Monitoring System. This is the backbone of any security system. The aspect of monitoring what is to be secured.

Monitoring systems are basically comprised of two elements. A “trigger”, which often come in the form of sensors (which are strategically positioned in key areas of a home), and a “control” which handles whatever information the “trigger” sends.

Most home security system equipment come bundled with different types of sensors (in our operational definition, “triggers”). Ranging from motion, to infrared, even to acoustic sensors, there are various types to chose from.

Motion sensors are triggered upon the detection of movement. Some may be more sensitive than others, but this type of sensor basically reacts to detected movement. Infrared sensors are triggered when something gets in the way of its predetermined path. Picture a foot getting in the way of a trip wire. That’s how infrared sensors work. Acoustic sensors work with sounds. These types of sensors rely on sound waves to “give away” the presence of intruders.

One type of sensor may outweigh the points of the other, thus a solid understanding of one’s surroundings would prove useful in deciding which type of “trigger” to choose from. Of course, there is nothing wrong with a combination of either of the types.

Security Surveillance Systems

To monitor events, surveillance cameras come into play. They are mostly used to capture images, which can be recorded, or not. Over the years, surveillance cameras have undergone one technological “facelift” to another.

From big and low in resolution, to small but high in resolution, the rate of technological development have made better and better cameras over the years.

Night vision cameras and high resolution digital surveillance cameras are examples of leading features one may want to explore when talking about surveillance cameras.

Though most homes don’t necessarily need to have a surveillance system installed (considering that maintenance cost for most surveillance systems are rather high), the presence of such often provides added security, for unexpected situations.

Smoke And Fire Sensors

Of course home security isn’t totally isolated only to fend off break-ins. Smoke and fire sensors are also essential items to consider when setting up a home security system.

There are wide ranges of smoke and fire detectors out in the market now, each with different features, but the basic aspect among all these type of sensors is their reaction once the presence of smoke is detected.

Most of these sensors work by optical detection or by ionization, some both ways. Some are even equipped to detect carbon monoxide, thus giving the device the capability to predict an instance of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Again, a clear understanding of one’s surroundings would greatly aid in deciding which type of sensor to get.

The above-mentioned aspects of home security systems are just basic elements that one needs to know about. With technology’s rapid rate of growth, newer, more sophisticated devices are coming out for consumer use everyday.

But the one thing that’s always remained the same since, would be that same peace of mind garnered from a stable home security system.
